Automated and Granular Alerting - is that Possible?

When setting up alerts and notifications for a monitoring tool you usually have to decide whether you want to do that in an automated manner or individually. The more you automate, the more time you save, but with automation you lose granularity, means your notifications will be spread wider.

Notifications Based on Libraries

This is where PRTG libraries enter the game: By tags, sensor types or simply by drag & drop you create libraries – individual device overviews in PRTG – with which you can automatically define precise notifications.

Let’s look at the publication process of a website for example. Quite some components are involved into that process like e.g. web servers, databases, firewalls, probably load balancers, hardware components, virtualization systems etc. All these components usually aren’t assigned to each other, means the monitoring solution can’t link them with each other automatically.

In PRTG you create a library out of all involved components using tags or simple drag & drop. Based in that library you can set up notifications and voilà – if any issues or failures occur, PRTG will automatically send a notification to the responsible colleague.
